Recipe | Vegan Sloppy Joes

I did it!

What I did was make a vegan sloppy joe that my non-vegan boyfriend approved of! That’s an accomplishment that can’t go unshared with the rest of the world. I was surprised at how much I loved this recipe, and I almost couldn’t stop eating loads of it. 😧

Let’s hope you all have a little more self control than I do, because you’re gonna need it once you’re done cooking.

This recipe uses TVP (textured vegetable protein)  as the meat replacement. If you are sensitive or allergic to soy products, you can substitute instead with mashed chickpeas

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups of textured vegetable protein (TVP)
  • Or, 2 1/2 cups of drained and mashed chickpeas (if soy sensitive)
  • 7/8 cups of veggie broth, plus another 1/2 cup set aside
  • 1 medium or large onion, chopped
  • 6oz tomato paste (a small can)
  • 1 cup of any vegan barbecue sauce
  • 1tsp garlic powder
  • 1tsp smoked paprika
  • 1tsp chili powder
  • *1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (*optional for added spicyness)
  • 1tsp coconut sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cracked pepper

Let’s start!

This is textured vegetable protein, otherwise known as TVP. It is a byproduct of soy, and is typically used as a meat replacer. It really doesn’t have any flavor, so you have to season it for it to reach its full potential!

It is dry when you purchase it, so you’re going to have to re-hydrate it before you use it. Bring your 7/8 cups of veggie broth to a boil in a small pot, and then add the TVP. Turn off the heat and stir until the water is completely absorbed. Set it aside.

In a small bowl combine the garlic powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, red pepper flakes, coconut sugar, and pepper. Set those aside as well.

Heat up a pan on medium heat and add the chopped onions, half of the spice mixture (you can measure it out or just eyeball it like I did) and put in a bit of oil or some vegetable broth to prevent them from sticking. Cook for about five minutes, or until the onions are clear, soft, and lightly caramelized / browned.

Turn down the heat to medium-low and add the remainder of the spice mixture, tomato paste, barbecue sauce, and the TVP. Stir well to combine everything together, and keep it on medium-low heat until everything is heated through.

It will smell crazy good. 👃

Load it up on your favorite kind of bun and you’re ready to enjoy!

This is the perfect recipe to make for your friends or family if they want to try a vegan version of this common meal. I bet they will love this one even more! You can even step it up and make some fries to go along with it. I have a recipe for Homemade Fries & Avocado Dipping Sauce that would go great with these!
