I was craving fries yesterday, so I grabbed some spuds and made a delicious batch of homemade french fries. This recipe is inspired by someone I recently watched on YouTube. Her name is Kalel, and she is a vegan youtube personality that showed her viewers how to make really great fries at home. My own recipe is differs slightly from hers, and I also added a dipping sauce for you to make on the side! You can check out her video here 🙂
Now onto the recipe!
For the fries you will need:
- 4-6 red potatoes (or any variety that you have on hand)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp parsley
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cracked black pepper
- 2 tbsp of all purpose flour
For the dipping sauce you will need:
- 1 ripe avocado
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
- 1 tsp maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
- 2 tsp sriracha hot sauce
- 2 tbsp of unsweetened almond milk
Preheat your oven to 400℉ (200℃). While the oven is heating up, you can start cutting up the potatoes. Make sure you rinse them off or wipe them down with a damp paper towel just to get off any dust.
If your potatoes have sprouted in some spots (like mine did), you can just carefully slice those off before you cut them up entirely.
I cut my potatoes into large slices, because I wanted thicker fries. Feel free to make them thinner if you want. They will taste great either way! They should look like the image below when they are done being cut up.
Add your sliced potatoes to a pot of cold water so they are completely submerged, and let them soak for about 5 minutes. Then turn your pot on high and wait for the water to come to a boil. Once you start to see a lot of bubbles and foam at the top of the pot, you can turn off the heat.
Once you have turned off the heat, drain the potatoes and put them back inside the pot. Add the seasonings and flour to the potatoes and stir them up very thoroughly to coat them evenly.
Line a baking sheet with some foil and coat the pan with olive oil. Spread out the coated potato slices onto the sheet so they are all seperated. Put them in the oven and let them cook for 20 minutes on one side, then flip the fries over and cook for another 20 minutes on the other side. The longer you cook these, the crispier they will be. I like my fries crispy, so I cooked these for quite a while and kept my eye on them closely.
This is what they should look like before going in the oven.
This is how mine turned out! Yummmmmmmmy. I only wish some of the pieces would have come out more evenly browned.
The dipping sauce is super easy. Take your avocado and remove the pit. Put it into a serving bowl and mash with a fork until it becomes creamy, then add your seasonings, sriracha, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and almond milk. Continue to mash with a fork until it becomes smooth and dippable.
And now you have a delicious and filling lunch, snack, or even dinner! I also had some leftover fries for the next day. Yay!
I hope you all enjoyed this recipe! Later this week I’ll have another post for you all. 🙂
